Hi Chris.
I dont know if the the price of coal was filmed at Elsecar Main, but I can tell you where it was. If you go onto Google Earth. Look for Wath Road .(REFORM ROW) . Scan roun to the east and you will see a desolate area Thats where the pit was. At the other end of Wath Road you will find Elsecar Heritage Centre. That is where the NCB central Workshops for No 3 Area was.

PS My Mothers Maiden name was Skidmore. Mary Ellen. Born1902 at number 10 Bethol Street Hoyland.

My grandparents lived in Cobcar Street, Elsecar . He was a miner and then groundsman in the park. He helped with laying out the park and the bandstand. I would like to find out which mine he worked at, probably Elsecar main but the only clue I have is one of his glassplate negatives that was taken of Elsecar Church from Elsecar Main .

My grandparrents lived in Cherrytree Street, sad to say the house has been demolished. I lived in St. Helens st, was born 1937. Moved to Gray Street in 1939. I attended King Street and that too has been demolished, then Kirk Balk. My father, Bill Hargreaves and my uncle Harry Baldock started the Elsecar and Hoyland Chrysanthemum Society. The shows were held in the Milton Hall. I wonder if it's still ongoing.
Seeing the old photo's brought back many happy memories. Elsecar Park still looks lovely. I now live in Clearwater, Florida overlooking the Gulf of Mexico.
Hoping to visit Elsecar in Dec (2011).

Seeking information on descendants of John & Maria Bagnall who at the time of 1901 & 1911 Census resided at 152 Reform Row, Elsecar. They had 11 children including my paternal grandmother Sarah Ann born 1895. John's occupation was recorded as coal-miner. Would love to hear from anyone with information.

I was hoping that someone could help me with any information about my mom and her family. My mom was born October 6th, 1930 in the upstairs of the Clothiers Arm Pub in Elsecar Hoyland to Harold Elam Smith and Lily Smith formerly Lily Thornhill. I believe they were the Inkeepers of the Clothiers Arm Pub at the time of my moms birth. My mothers name was Mary Elizabeth Smith. She then married an american man who was in the US Navy in 1954. His name was Roland Melvin Trantow. If anyone has any information on Harold Smith, Lily Smith formerly Thornhill or my mother Mary Elizabeth Smith I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you!

Hi, Lynn. Everything O.K at the moment. How are all the Kings , and the Leavesleys going? Pure luck I found the site. Was looking for some info for another site, and came across the question from Joanne. Still, I suppose it's not so surprising when your Mam and I were just 2 of the 72 grandchildren that Mary Ann left when she died. Surprisingly, I've been in Hoyland /Elsecar twice in the last month. Once down at the Heritage Centre with Tideswell Choir, then last Sat we had a run to see Mona Guest. Remember Guest's Butchers? Mona, Christopher's mother, and Mam were big buddies, and we keep in touch, though not as often as poss., so we had a run to see her last Sat. Vera and I are going down Devon next month to stay with sister Carol and her family. Great to hear from you.

Hello Buxtongent, thanks ever so much for your reply. I posted my reply in the wrong place under "Buxtongent says ..." because I was so excited to hear from a Levitt relative! I remember Aunty Annie and Uncle Ben, I am Sheila's youngest daughter. I remember happy times at Nanna Vera and Grandad Joe's when all the relatives from Yorkshire came to visit, I was only a little girl but I remember the lovely happy family atmosphere. I made a family history book which I could e-mail to you if you'd like to read it. With very best regards to all the family, Joanne.

That brought back memories.
I used to know a man called George Daniels very well, live about 5th house up on LHS Hawshaw lane.
Worked as a winding engine man at Barrow colliery.
Think he died from cancer of the throat.
Give me a call if you want to know more.

An interesting site (although I'm no photographer myself) . The old pictures are evocative. Hoyland was one of my old drinking grounds in the 60's & early 70's : The Turf , Strafford Arms , Gardiners Arms , The Clothiers and an occasional trip to the Birdcage (Tony Christie sang there) . Friday night punch-ups outside the Town Hall provide entertainment for the bus queue opposite (waiting for the last bus of the night , the Jump Circular ) and were quelled only after the participants had run out of energy and the local bobbies came from round the corner to sort things out.
Quite a few of my ancestors came from the area and I was back having a look around just a couple of weeks ago . How things have changed! It's not the same without the old Town Hall--how could a building like that get demolished?
Anyone know where I can get a copy of Around Hoyland ,Second Selection by Geoffrey Howse?
With best wishes for the success of the site PM

Have recently been working on my family tree. My grandad was from Hoyland and actually lived in Hoyland Lowe stand when he was a boy. He was born 1907 his name was Harry Garnett. His mother was a teacher and her mother and father were headmaster and headmistress at Jump school, their names were "Grand" and are both buried in Hoyland Cemetery. I was born in Hawshaw Lane before moving south to porsmouth at the age of 18. My Father George Daniels and his wife Edna (nee Williamson 0 live most of their lives there. I have spent time build a family tree as I knew little about the family other that immediate relations and my Great Grand father lived in a miners house near the Royal Oak Public house Platts Common.
